To the People of North Dakota,

As this year comes to a close, my focus in the lame duck session has been on critical issues, including our nation's long-term fiscal challenges and the Farm Bill. In addition, my staff and I are taking on another task - closing down my offices as the end of my term nears. I wanted to take this opportunity to thank you for the privilege of serving you in the U.S. Senate.

I set out on this journey of public service so many years ago because I wanted to serve the great people of North Dakota, and make a difference for our state and our nation. I always fought for North Dakota, and through floods, farming disasters, and air base closures, you fought right alongside me. And it is good to see a North Dakota today blessed with strong economic growth.

The challenges in our country today are not so different from those that we faced when I took the Oath of Office in 1987. We still battle debt, deficits and economic slowdown in parts of the country. But I know that we have faced tough times before, and I am confident that if we come together as a nation, we can emerge stronger for it.

Throughout my tenure, I have always enjoyed hearing from you. As we approach the final days of my time in office and, as Congress considers options to address our nation's long-term fiscal challenges, your input is important to me. While I may not be able to respond to every comment received before my office closes, I remain very much interested in hearing your thoughts.

It has been an honor to represent you and serve our great nation for the past 26 years. I feel incredibly fortunate that you put your support and trust behind me. Serving North Dakota from this seat will always be the greatest honor of my life.
