Ohio’s 8th Congressional District is one of the largest agricultural districts in the Buckeye State. It boasts more than 5,400 farms growing grains, produce and raising livestock on nearly 1 million acres.  Each year, I host Farm Forum to bring together experts from different sectors of the agriculture community for a discussion of ideas impacting this vital industry. This year’s forum featured a panel discussion of food safety and sustainability, animal welfare and energy prices on the agricultural industry.

The 2012 Eighth Congressional District Farm Forum was held on Saturday, March 24, 2012, at Troy Christian Elementary in Troy.

The keynote speaker was Mark Stonacek, President of Cargill Grain & Oilseed, North America.  After joining Cargill in 1988 as a merchandising trainee, Mr. Stonacek spent 23 years in various management and merchandising roles in Cargill’s grain and oilseed business.  Today, Mr. Stonacek is responsible for business operations in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, including export grain, soybean processing, softseed processing, biodiesel, and Cargill's barge line, vessel agency, and stevedoring operations.   A Nebraska native, Mark has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics and Mathematics from St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minnesota.  He and his wife Heather have two boys, ages 16 and 13.
