Speaker Boehner Says White House Fiscal Cliff Offer is "Nonsense," Calls for Spending Cuts & Tax Reform
Posted by Press Office on December 02, 2012
On Fox News Sunday, Speaker John Boehner said Republicans have offered a balanced approach to averting the fiscal cliff but the president is "not being serious about coming to an agreement." Boehner says the White House is holding tax increases over the heads of the middle class while demanding more spending and tax rate hikes that will hurt small businesses. Here are some of the highlights:

Boehner: President Obama' s Fiscal Cliff Offer is "Nonsense," a "Non-Serious Proposal":

"A non-serious proposal. The president was asking for $1.6 trillion worth of, uh, new revenue over 10 years, twice as much as he's been asking for in public. He has stimulus spending in here that exceeded the amount of new cuts that he was willing to consider. It was not a serious offer. ... I looked at [Secretary Geithner] and I said, 'you can't be serious?' ... You know, we've got several weeks between Election Day and the end of the year. And, uh -- and three of those way -- weeks have been wasted, uh, with the -- with this nonsense."

Boehner: President Obama Asked for More New Spending Than Spending Cuts:

"We've put a serious offer on the table by putting revenues up there to try to get this question resolved. But the White House has responded with virtually nothing. They have actually asked for more revenue than they've been -- been asking for the whole entire time. ... And all of this new stimulus spending would literally be more than the spending cuts that he was willing to put on the table. ... Look at the fact that they put $400 billion worth of unspecified cuts up that they'd be willing to talk about, but yet, at the same time, that's over $400 billion over 10 years. Uh, while he wants over $400 billion in new stimulus spending. And this is -- this is -- it's a non-serious proposal."

Boehner: What Will President Obama Do With $1.6 Trillion? Spend It!

"I mean think about the -- the proposal we got from the president. If we gave the president $1.6 trillion of new money, what do you think he'd do with it? He's going to spend it. It's what Washington does. ... They'll spend it."

Boehner: Raising Tax Rates Will Hurt Small Businesses and Destroy Jobs:

"Now, listen, I believe that raising tax rates hurts our economy, hurts the prospects for more jobs in our country. And I realize that the president may disagree. But the fact is, is that if there's another way to get revenue, uh, from upper income Americans, that doesn't hurt our economy, then why wouldn't we consider it?"

Boehner: Spending Cuts & Reforms Must Exceed Any Increase in the Debt Limit:

"Forever. Silliness. Congress is never going to give up this power. I've made it clear to the president that every time we get to the debt limit, we need cuts and reforms that are greater than the increase in the debt limit. It's the only way to leverage the political process to produce more change than what it would if left alone.

Boehner: Going Over the Fiscal Cliff Will Hurt Our Economy, Is Not Fair to the American People:

"[T]his isn't an issue about Democrats and Republicans. My goodness, this is about our country. And we get -- ought to get serious about dealing with the problems at the end of the year. And we need to get serious about our deficit and our debt, uh, that are burying our children's future. ... [G]oing over the cliff will hurt our economy, will hurt job creation in our country. It's not fair to the American people. ... This agreement should come sooner rather than later, because just the threat of the fiscal cliff is already hurting our economy."

I'm a Republican that can't understand when the the Republican Congress is going to grow up and work for the people they represent. For the RICH to pay an additional 2% in taxes will not hurt business nor the rich. Most of the rich understand the problem and have no objection to the taxes raise at all. Get this bill pasted and move on. The Democrats won the election, another sign the public agrees with the bill, and we, the republicans, must learn to live with it and learn to work with them. I am so disgusted with the Republican Congress, I will never for to reinstate or vote for a new republican Congressman again.

Greetings, I am 58 years old and am almost certain that I will never see my country as a thriving free solvent republic again. I had breakfast with my small business friends this am and all are referring to a "post" america scenario. Some of them are Greek and are relaying stories of great suffering in their homeland and fear we will join them soon. We are all in agremment that we will spend no additional funds for the forseeable future to expand our businesses. Some of us are making plans to leave the country if we become insolvent. A lot have put their savings into Canada for fear of a severe currency devaluation of the American dollar. Good luck John but I am afraid you will live to see the ultimate politicians nightmare, the complete loss of faith in you and our system.

Just saw that you are proposing to reduce SS cost-of-livining increases. I am against this and if it happens my participation in GOP fund raising will end!! Rather raise the age.

Dear Speaker Boehner: Please do not include a reduction in the home mortgage interest deduction in any compromise legislation on the budget. Our two income family strains at the cost of our million dollar mortgage and we are certainly not wealthy. In our area, and in most large cities, a reasonable single family home costs in the million dollar range or more. In Manhattan, that gets you an 800 square foot studio. The drop in real estate prices already wiped out the equity in our home. If we lose the deduction, there will be no reason to keep paying on our mortgage. This move would cripple the still limping real estate and construction industries and certainly not help the banking industry. The best loans the banks can give are to the dual income families with people who have good jobs but stretch to reach the dream of owning their own home, even if they happen to live and work in an expensive area. I am not a member of any special interest group but I am concerned for my own family's well being.

Mr. Boehner, please try to find a solution to this mess that we are currently in.We as Americans need to work together and solve this financial mess that has been created. We are a great people and we should act like it. Please, please I am hoping you can be American enough to want this, sir. Thank you.

I realize your not a bad guy but a little misguided. The world is not flat. Your and your party are for the lack of a better word, out of touch. I realize you and your rich friends hate to part with a penny but thats what cost you the election. I am a retired military man and one of the 47% you and your party forgot about. Good luck with that idea.

I think that a constant increase in taxes and spending is at base of what the Speaker is afraid of. I fear an ever engulfing government also. It's American to fear such things. I think that a deal to keep as many tax cuts as possible would be the best situation for the speaker. A victory is a victory and if you are for lower taxes in general, Mr. Speaker, that would sound like a win at least partially. If the economy goes back into recession because of the fiscal cliff then we all lose. What's important is that you can declare some kind of win and get this impending debate over for the time being before it damages you or your party. There's still a fight to get lower spending. Make it to mid-terms intact not fractured as a party. If we go over the fiscal cliff Congress will be blamed because of it's plural composition and popularity. The President and yourself are both honest. Please cut a deal. I have faith in you both. God bless and thank you Mr. Speaker.

Mr. Boehner, how can you let us go over the cliff. You and the other republicans say the economy isn't improving but you know it is. Housing has improve and all you do is lie about it. It's not growing as fast as the President would like but it is growing slowley. If you would have passed the job bills the President proposed we would be doing better and more people would be working. You won't tax the rich but you want to cut Social Security(I get $745 a month, could you live on that) Which I helped pay for when I worked, cut Medicare and Medicate but give the rich a break. How fair is that?????So do the right thing and give us a break and tax your rich friends they can afford to pay their fair share. They have had eight years of lowerer taxes and no job growth has been achieved,

Hang in there...we have to make our President realize what every American knows, spend more than you can afford on that credit card and there will be repurcussions. In WWII we all made sacrifices and that is what must happen now, cuts straight across the board, tax reform must happen to save our precious country.

The 1 thing that I missed seeing on the web sites is the government spending: Pelosi's Bar Bill, the "car pooling" or lowering the transportation for the government and President and First Lady- we car pool and commute together when we can, NOT because we choose to. I am all too sure that there are others, but I do know that $10 will buy us 2 gallons of milk and a gallon of orange juice, we have lowered our grocery bill just to make it. I have been underemployed for several years and unable to go back to my previous profession, in the medical field, due to my ethnicity and language barriers (I only speak English). We have student loans that are equal to our house payment, we itemize our taxes. We have a grandmother and father on SS and Medicare; they seriously can NOT afford any increases to anything. Many of our doctors stopped taking Medicare or Medicaid, because it didn't cover their expenses to bill it. I know this from when I worked in the field, they barely broke even then. We have 3 children who are struggling to stay out on their own and will not go back to school since they look at our income and we would be responsible for that debt. We have always been middle class- the middle class, that is dying out, less than $100,000 since I do not make the money I used to. I have also repeatedly asked that someone look into the immigration problem, they have milked the government dry. They have taken our property values lower than what they sold for about 25 years ago. It is money we will never recoup. The "stimulus" packages were never anything that would help us- we made too much money, or our surrounding properties were too low for the balance of the mortgage ($100,000, the highest being sold for $70,000). I still see more immigrants, than Americans! I know 3 immigrants who came legally and they are continually frustrated with the "American Dream" they came for, because they see so many who are illegal. We have a drug trafficking problem, theft, burglaries, and all of these people with the "stair step" children on government assistance. This was not a talked about problem with "entitlements", but I saw this coming and wrote to many people, made many calls, signed petitions because I saw this happening and I knew that this was going to be a problem. This "recession" that "started" in whatever it is said to have started, started here 2 years before and still has not ended. Atlanta Suburbs

Mr. Boehner, I think you should vote immediately for the tax reform to stay as it is. If you don't and we "fall off the cliff", I will never vote Republican again. You should go along with the increase in taxes on the wealthy. It will benefit the entire country. I am a retired nurse living on social security and barely getting by. The Republicans have got to start working with the Dems to get things going in this country. I don't understand why you don't. YOU didn't last term either. You are afraid it will make him look good. Well, in 2 years you might be gone. I know so many people that feel as I do. If you don't start working together, the Republican party will be almost finished. Thank you for reading this. Addie Davis

I will pray for you but put the Amash and the other young man back in. I tired of compromise with the devil arn't you? Stand Firm!

The Constitution gives the House the control over government spending. Please do not let President Obama usurp that power by allowing him a no debt ceiling. Stick to your guns that reducing government spending is the only way to save our economy and our children's future. Do not compromise your conservative values. We are depending on you to do what is right. Thanks,Cathy Odom.

this is in regard to the"fiscal cliff"which we hear and read so much about.my husband and receive social security plus i receive receive a small state pension ,$4000 for 15 years work, and a small investment in the local utility company.my husband receives social security and a pension from the local utility company ,and income from some company stock.our combined in come does not exceed , a gross amount of $70,000.of which 85 % of the social security is taxed.we are not against restructuring the tax code to raise the taxes on those who can afford it,but please Mr Beyner, don't get pressured to go along with the democrats and president ideas on how to increase income. I am not the holder of a top degree, however I am not stupid.Raising taxes on the top 2% will not make a "dent"in our countrys debt and if more free programs are funded ,there is no way the usa can catch up.where is the sense of this .? why not make a flat tax with no deductions above the personal ones?It would be more fair and bring in more money than what is being considered.I am a very concerned 82 year old ,for the future of this great country,if there is a future,It does not look good.
