September 11, 2009

We remember today all those who lost their lives as a result of the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. My thoughts and prayers are with all those families who are missing their loved ones so much. Please know that a nation reflects and remembers with you today.

President Obama and Health Care

On Wednesday President Obama addressed the nation regarding plans to reform our health care system. As you are aware, it has been a summer of heated debates and forceful exchanges of ideas. I think we are making progress, but it is not clear yet when a bill will be brought to the House for a vote. As we move to the next phase of the debate over health care reform, I remain committed to a strong public option. I have joined my colleagues from the Congressional Progressive Caucus in sending two letters to President Obama emphasizing my support for a public plan. I am also still closely monitoring the health care discussions to determine what impact a final bill will have on Massachusetts. I don’t expect a vote on health care next week but progress may be made on merging the three House health care bills. As always, I will keep you informed.

Votes

On Tuesday the House returned to session with votes on a number of suspension bills as well as consideration of H.R. 965: Chesapeake Bay Gateways and Watertrails Network Continuing Authorization Act. This legislation permanently authorizes the Chesapeake Bay Gateways Network, an initiative started in 1998 to preserve the resources of the Chesapeake Bay. It encompasses more than 64,000 square miles of recreational area, wildlife refuges and waterways in six states and Washington, D.C. I voted YES. H.R. 965 passed and the entire vote is recorded below:
