Health Insurance Reform Print Share

After a year-long debate in Congress, President Obama signed a major new law, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, which provides Americans with health care security for the first time.  Our health care system had not been working for millions of Americans.  It had major gaps in some places, and needed repair in others.  This new law is an enormous step forward – one that will bring great benefit to New Mexico families.  It will lower costs, improve quality, and provide affordable coverage for the more than 400,000 uninsured New Mexicans who were previously unable to access affordable health insurance.  It will significantly increase access for all Americans to preventative services and invest new federal resources in developing a healthcare workforce that meets our nation's needs.

This page is meant to be a resource for New Mexicans as the new law is gradually phased in, now through 2014.  Check back often to learn more about how the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act will affect you and your family as new information becomes available, and feel free to look at our Health Care Roadmap to find easy-to-read answers to many of your health care questions.
