Velázquez on Economic Recovery Legislation

Washington, D.C. – House Small Business Committee Chairwoman Nydia M. Velázquez (D-NY) released the following statement regarding economic recovery legislation that was approved by the House Appropriations Committee:

“Small businesses have always been the backbone of our economy and they will once again need to lead the way in our nation’s economic recovery.

“To date, much of the assistance has not reached our nation’s small businesses.   That is why it is so important that this measure includes provisions to help entrepreneurs who are unable to secure affordable credit.  By allowing the Small Business Administration to play a more active role, and by unfreezing credit markets, this bill will give smaller firms access to the capital they need to say afloat, create jobs and help drive this recovery.

“I was pleased to work with the House Leadership to include these provisions, which will help small businesses on Main Streets around the country.  This part of the bill was developed through ongoing discussions will small businesses, and I believe the legislation goes a long way toward addressing their needs.  I look forward to working with all of my colleagues as this package moves forward.”
