Lautenberg Declares Victory for Air Travelers as Passenger Bill of Rights Goes Into Effect

Lautenberg Press Office (202) 224-3224
Thursday, April 29, 2010
WASHINGTON — U.S. Sen. Frank R. Lautenberg (D-NJ), a member of the Senate Subcommittee on Aviation Operations, Safety and Security, today applauded the implementation of a new Department of Transportation ruling that will provide air travelers with a Passenger Bill of Rights.

“This regulation could not be more clear - keeping air passengers stranded on the tarmac for hours will not be tolerated and airlines that do it will be punished,” stated Lautenberg. “Passengers will finally be given the rights they deserve and airlines will finally be held accountable for the treatment of their customers. This is a major victory for the flying public and I commend Secretary LaHood for making it a priority.”

Lautenberg fought to successfully include a Passenger Bill of Rights provision in recently approved Senate legislation to reauthorize the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The provision would make permanent the Passenger Bill of Rights and require airlines to ensure passengers have adequate food, potable water, and restroom facilities for delays longer than three hours. The provision would also require airlines to have a contingency plan for delays longer than three hours.
