Education

Johnny with Georgia students on the Capitol steps Education has always been my passion because I believe a quality education – whether public, private or home school – is the key to a better quality of life, lower unemployment, keeping folks off welfare and expanding economic prosperity for all Americans.

I am very pleased to be a member of the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions. I attended public schools. My three children attended public schools. From 1996 to 1998, I was proud to serve as Chairman of the Georgia Board of Education.

I will continue to work towards enhancing and improving our nation’s education system. I will also work to keep the dream of a college education within reach of all Americans by supporting federal assistance programs that help make higher education affordable.

'No Child Left Behind'

In 2001, as a member of the U.S. House, I helped draft No Child Left Behind, which was a comprehensive education reform to strengthen this nation’s public schools by providing them with the necessary resources to give all children a quality education.

One provision included in No Child Left Behind called Adequate Yearly Progress, or AYP, requires that states use standardized testing in order to measure progress. AYP is a measure of year-to-year student achievement on statewide tests and sets the bar higher each year for schools.  After 10 years of implementation, I believe that AYP has served its purpose in raising expectations and standards. To that end, while I believe that schools should still report their progress, it is time for Congress to repeal AYP in the reauthorization of No Child Left Behind
