Mike Byrne, the Federal Coordinating Officer for FEMA in the state of New York, grew up in East Harlem and is a proud New Yorker, and honored to be a part of the team. In his own words, here is a reflection on the past month and the road ahead and a breakdown by the numbers in the first 30 days.
As New Yorkers remain in their homes or consider returning home, New York State and FEMA urge them to be careful, remain safe and plan properly for their future.

- New York residents beginning the rebuilding process will have the opportunity to get expert advice from FEMA mitigation specialists. Beginning on Tuesday, December 11 experts will offer guidance on ways homeowners can build safer and stronger in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.
- Make sure FEMA has your current contact information if you have applied for disaster assistance. After registering, FEMA will reach out to you to set up housing inspections and mail determination letters, so updating your phone number and mailing address as needed is key to ensure that your recovery is not delayed.
- Don't forget to promptly return your completed loan application to the U.S. Small Business Administration. This is an important step in the Disaster Assistance process.

The deadline for Hurricane Sandy survivors in New York to register for Federal Emergency Management Agency disaster assistance has been extended to January 28, 2013.
New York has two new Disaster Recovery Centers (DRCs) opening to assist Hurricane Sandy survivors with getting the help they need.
