As a Member of the House of Representatives, Senator Gillibrand was a lead sponsor of legislation to implement the 9/11 Commission recommendations. That legislation, which passed with bipartisan support, included important changes to aviation and port security, including increased funding for airport security improvements and screening of all incoming cargo bound for U.S. ports.
The bill also increased grants to improve interoperable emergency communications, and improved information sharing among federal, state and local governments and first responders. It also reformed the risk-based allocation formula which provides federal funding to the states to ensure that New York receives increased homeland security funding.
Working with Allies Around the World
For years, America's foreign policy has isolated our allies and made our work in the international community more and more difficult. As a Member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Senator Gillibrand will work to strengthen U.S. relationships around the world.
Strengthening the US-Israel Friendship
Specifically, Senator Gillibrand will continue to strengthen America's close relationship with the State of Israel. In the House of Representatives, she stood with Israel to protect its citizens against terrorist threats, strengthen sanctions against Iran to prevent them from developing nuclear weapons, and supporting Israel's continued efforts to bring peace to its people. The U.S. and Israel have a strong bond, and in the Senate, Senator Gillibrand will advocate for policies that continue to strengthen their deep friendship.
