Hatch: Preserve the Integrity of the Senate, Do Not Change the Filibuster

Utah Senator Says “Rather than blowing up the Senate, I suggest that the majority actually try working with the minority. That’s something we haven’t seen under the current majority leader’s tenure.”

In a speech today on the Senate Floor, U.S. Senator Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) today argued that there is no need to change the Senate’s filibuster rules, and that any efforts to do so would threaten the integrity of the Senate. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and many other Democrat Senators have said in recent weeks that they will move to change the Senate rules to limit the minorities use of the filibuster when the 113th Congress is sworn in in January, 2013.

Hatch, Colleagues Push Back on President Obama's Debt Limit Power Grab

44 Senators Write to President Obama to Drop Misguided Plan to Eliminate Congressional Role over the Debt Ceiling

U.S. Senator Orrin Hatch (R-Utah), Ranking Member of the Senate Finance Committee, today joined with 43 colleagues in sending a letter to President Obama that underscores the need for any deficit reduction deal to ensure that the people’s elected representatives will continue to have a say over the nation’s debt limit. The Obama Administration’s initial offer in fiscal cliff negotiations gave the President unilateral power to raise the debt limit without any Congressional oversight.

In Speech, Hatch Outlines Consequences of President's Small Business Tax Hike Plan; Need for Entitlement Reform

Utah Senator Says, “It is time for the President to put away his campaign talking points, engage in finding a balanced solution to our debt crisis, lead the country, and protect American small business, their workers, and our children from a dim fiscal future.”

In a speech on the Senate floor today, U.S. Senator Orrin Hatch (R-Utah), Ranking Member of the Senate Finance Committee, outlined how the President’s plan to raise taxes on the top two marginal tax rates will severely hurt economic growth and job creation by hitting millions of small businesses with higher taxes. Hatch further called on the President to work with Congress to reform America’s entitlement programs as a means of solving America’s debt crisis.
