Coats Praises Passage of Senate Resolution Supporting Israel

WASHINGTON, DC – Senator Dan Coats (R-Ind.) today praised Senate passage of a bipartisan resolution stating that the United States strongly supports Israel’s inherent right to act in self-defense to protect its citizens against acts of terrorism. The resolution was introduced by Senators Mark Kirk (R-Ill.) and Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) and cosponsored by 62 others, including Coats.

"Showering hundreds of deadly missiles on a civilian population is an unconscionable crime that must be condemned," said Senator Coats, a member of the Senate Intelligence Committee. "This resolution sends a clear message that the United States stands with Israel and its right to defend itself."

The Senate unanimously approved the resolution in a demonstration of widespread support for Israel as the country defends itself from hundreds of Gaza-based terrorist missiles targeting Israeli civilians. Nearly 1,000 terrorist missiles have been fired from Gaza into Israel this year.

The resolution urges President Obama to work with the international community to prevent Hamas and other terrorist organizations within Gaza from retaining the ability to launch rockets against Israel. Additionally, the resolution calls on the United Nations Security Council to condemn Gaza-based attacks against Israel.
