Senate Aging Committee Minority Staff to Hold Public Briefing Tuesday, December 11: "Older Americans Act: Options to Better Target Need and Improve Equity"

GAO to Present Findings from Report Analyzing State Funding Allocations to Better Address Unmet Need in OAA Programs

WASHINGTON -Minority staff for U.S. Senator Bob Corker, R-Tenn., ranking member of the Special Committee on Aging, will hold a public briefing on Tuesday, December 11 at 10:00 a.m. ET at which the Government Accountability Office will present a report: “Older Americans Act: Options to Better Target Need and Improve Equity.”

The 1965 Older Americans Act distributes funding to states for services that help older adults remain in their homes and communities as they age. A significant percentage of older Americans experience unmet need in OAA programs as GAO found in its 2011 report: “More Should Be Done to Measure the Extent of Unmet Need for Services.” As the number of older adults grows, demand for services will grow. This reality, combined with resource limitations, prompts concerns about how the needs of this population can be met. In the report requested by Corker, GAO will provide options for consideration to change statutory formulas of state funding allocations from the Administration on Aging to better target support for OAA programs as our nation ages and we continue to experience a time of great fiscal constraint.

A question and answer session will follow GAO’s presentation of the report’s findings.
