CONGRESSIONAL INTERNSHIP POSITION:

Summer and semester-long internship positions are offered in the Committee on Natural Resources Democratic staff offices of Representative Edward Markey for college and graduate students who are committed, hard-working individuals interested in gaining hands-on experience in public service and government work.  Representative Markey, the Dean of the Massachusetts Congressional delegation, is a 17-term Democrat from Malden, Massachusetts first elected in 1976.  Congressman Markey is the Ranking Member of the Natural Resources Committee which is tasked with stewardship over American public lands, parks and forests, to protect wildlife, oceans and waterways from polluters and the threat of climate change, and oversee the production of various energy resources on public lands. In addition to this, Mr. Markey is a senior member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee and served as the Chairman of the Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming during the 111th Congress.  In the over 35 years that he has served in Congress, Representative Markey has been one of the body’s most active legislators, championing environmental issues and consumer rights. He has fought to preserve the Artic Wildlife Refuge, to pass an Energy bill that improved fuel efficiency standards for motor vehicles and protected our planet from global warming. He has been a national leader in telecommunications and internet policy, championing net neutrality, and writing the laws that banned insider trading on Wall Street and that broke up telecommunication monopolies. He has also been one of the foremost opponents of nuclear proliferation and serves as the Co-Chair of the Non-Proliferation Caucus in the Congress. Congressman Markey is a strong advocate of strengthening investments in scientific and medical research, homeland security issues, and protecting consumer privacy.

  • Qualifications:  Applicants must be undergraduate or graduate students who can work independently and possess outstanding writing, research, and interpersonal skills.
  • Commitment & Credit: Semester-long internships can be completed on a fulltime (40 hours/five days per week) and part-time basis (approx. 20 hours –or 2-3 days per week). Summer internships are typically completed on a full-time basis for 8-10 weeks usually beginning in early June and ending in early August. Obtaining school credit for your internship is permitted by the Committee but should be pre-approved with your academic institution.
  • Job Description:  Interns assist the Member and staff in all areas of the office operation.  Responsibilities include: researching legislative initiatives, preparing briefing memos, conducting background studies, attending Congressional hearings and briefings, participating in meetings, conferences, and website content development, and assisting with a variety of legislative and press projects. Interns are assigned to work with senior legislative assistants based on issue interests or expertise.  The office is seeking interns to work on a variety of issues, particularly the Environment, Global Warming, National Parks, Indian Affairs, Oceans, Wildlife, Water and Power and Renewable Energy issues.
