Congresman Stivers, I tried to leave a voice mail message at your DC office, but your mailbox is full. That is why I am writing to you again. My e-mail to your office did not reach you either so I am posting my thoughts to you. I am extremely disappointed in the continued political posturing that is going on in Washington instead of the serious work of reaching a compromise. You are there to represent us and do the work of governing. I am really irritated that the House of Representatives is going through the same shenanigans as last year at this time. Most Americans are fed up with the lack of compromise among the political parties, especially the Republican party based on today's comments by Speaker Boehner. For the majority of Americans (and Ohioans in particular), the result of the Presidential election made your choice very clear. We favor an increase in tax rates on the wealthiest 2% of Americans to share our burden as a starting point for any negotiations. It's very clear to me who I will hold accountable if this intransigence leads to a recession because of Congress' failure to act rationally. About as fed up with Congress as I could possibly be. I hope that you will take this message to your leadership.

    • Well Steve, I'm sorry to say, I'm one of the people who lost you as my Congressional Representative due to the new district now held by Joyce Beatty. I've always felt you and Pat Tiberi are doing a fine job. I am a senior on a Medigold medicare advantage plan, and I hope you will do all necessary to prevent any cuts in Medicare benefits. Many thanks.

Why are illegal aliens interning in government positions? "For a long time in my life it's been fear and shame, afraid of being deported, and ashamed of being undocumented," Marco Saavedra tells me, a 20-year-old student of sociology at Kenyon College who was born in Oaxaca, Mexico. Marco didn't make it to day 10 – he halted his fast on the eighth day with approval by all of the other hunger strikers. He had to start a summer internship at the New York City department of education, and his fellow strikers agreed it would defeat the purpose to show up on his first day of work near starvation.

Why wasn't the illegal alien registered sex offender deported when first discovered? Did he come alone? Who else in his family is here illegally? What has he been doing all these year? Don't you need a government ID to enter-much less intern or work in a government building? Why wasn't his name on he sex offender list? How many more like him or worse are there? http://www.usatoday.com/story/news/politics/2012/12/12/menendez-senate-intern-illegal-immigrant/1764637/

    •  Prohibition of Oversight Committee ─ I informed the 1851 congressional legal center that the U.S. government departments ask for agency cost twice. We should prohibit Congressional oversight committee meetings. I want the Oversight committee members, Office of Management and Budget and the Office of Chief Legislative Liaison sued for being incompetent. I don't know why their setting up and coming to such events. Internet References ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. 8. Today, on the 71st anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor, we remember those who served our nation so bravely on the “day that will live in infamy.” Great story in The Columbus Dispatch today about Pearl Harbor.

You can read the article here:

    Up to the next generation
“Pearl Harbor –— Dec. 7, 1941 –— Lest We Forget.”
    By Jeb Phillips

The Pearl Harbor Survivors Association disbanded last...
    ye
ar, just after the 70th anniversary of the attack.

On Dec. 7, 1941, about 60,000 military-service members were stationed at Pearl Harbor. In 2011, there weren’t enough left to continue the association.

So on this 71st anniversary of the date that will live in infamy, their legacy has become the responsibility of their children:
    • Wayne Lingafelter of the East Side, whose father was on the USS Nevada at Pearl Harbor and died in 1994.
    • Joanna Groden, a cancer researcher at Ohio State University whose father was on the USS Henley and died in 2007.
    • John J. Kokorchen of Prairie Township, whose father was stationed at the Army’s Schofield Barracks and died in 1972.

Lingafelter and Groden are Ohio members of the Sons and Daughters of Pearl Harbor Survivors. Kokorchen is joining.

“I don’t belong to this organization to make any kind of political point,” said Groden, 56. “It’s something I do for my father’s memory.”

The sons and daughters group began as a spinoff of the national survivors association in 1973. Its members have attended survivors’ reunions for decades.

But this is the first year that the national convention is being hosted by the sons and daughters themselves, said Louella Large, who lives in East Canton and serves as national president of the descendants’ group. She is in San Diego today for the convention.

As Ohio’s state chairwoman a few years ago, Large pushed for the creation of a southern Ohio chapter that would include Columbus. Northern Ohio has chapters in Canton and in the Cleveland area.

Lingafelter, 58, a member of the sons and daughters since the mid-1970s, tried to start one. He got seven or so Pearl Harbor children together, but the group never took off.

Creating chapters feels more urgent now that there’s no parent organization left, Large said. Lingafelter knows of only four actual Pearl Harbor survivors living in central Ohio. The sons and daughters organization will have its first membership drive next year.

The motto of the survivors association was immediate: “Remember Pearl Harbor — Keep America Alert — Eternal Vigilance is the Price of Liberty.”

The motto of the sons and daughters is one of conservation: “Pearl Harbor — Dec. 7, 1941 — Lest We Forget.”

Kokorchen, 71, has known of the sons and daughters organization for at least a decade. He said he’s always intended to join and now will, for his own family, as much as anything.

“My grandchildren and the great-grands will be interested in this,” he said.

Survivors’ children, nieces and nephews, and their descendants are eligible for membership.

There is another sort of person who is interested in the success of the sons and daughters: the survivors themselves.

James O. Buford, 94, lives on the South Side. He was an officers’ steward aboard the USS St. Louis on Dec. 7, 1941, in charge of an eating area. Just after breakfast, the announcement came over the loudspeaker that everyone needed to go to quarters — a kind of “all hands on deck”call.

“Everybody thought it was a drill,” Buford said. He spent the attack distributing ammunition from the back of the ship.

He didn’t know about the sons and daughters organization until Kokorchen got in touch with him before today’s anniversary. Most of the Buford clan lives in Tennessee. He’s going to tell them about the group and hopes they’ll join.

“It’s important for your offspring to know the history of their country,” Buford said.

  9. What do you think about this editorial in today’s The Columbus Dispatch?

    Familiar story
Government good at spending, not so good at oversight

How disappointing, but how unsurprising: The Ohio inspector general says nearly $467,000 of $2.8...
million in federal stimulus money for job training in Ohio might have been misspent.

More than $250,000 of the questionable and improperly documented spending is pegged to a $1 million fund overseen by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services.

Some grant money was used to pay people’s cell phone bills and the rent on an office from a man with a conflict of interest; the head of a company charged with overseeing the grant was paid an amount in salary that made sense only if she had worked 15 hours per day, seven days a week.

As with so many stimulus-funded projects, the Constructing Futures initiatives relied on contracted agencies to oversee the spending.

In many undertakings, such as subsidized home-weatherization projects, a scramble to spend the money quickly leads to large-scale waste and, sometimes, fraud. Those who are spending other people’s money have far less incentive to ensure that it is spent well.

Whether the apparent irregularities in the Constructing Futures programs stem from honest mistakes, sloppy record-keeping or intent to cheat, they could have been prevented with better oversight.

  10. In case you missed it, two of my bills: The Cents and Sensibility Act and the STEEL Nickel Act were heard in subcommittee last week. Both bills lower the cost of producing pennies and nickels by ensuring they are minted with American steel instead of minerals imported from outside the United States.
