Rep. Waxman to Introduce Legislation to Monitor Antibiotic Use in Animals

Today Energy and Commerce Committee Ranking Member Henry A. Waxman announced plans to introduce legislation to increase information on the amount and use of antibiotics in animals raised for human consumption. The bill, the “Delivering Antibiotic Transparency in Animals (DATA) Act”, will provide critical information to the FDA about the amounts and types of antibiotics being fed to livestock. Rep. Waxman made the announcement at a press conference in Santa Monica where he was joined by Chef Mary Sue Milliken of Border Grill Restaurant, Chef Nancy Silverton of Osteria Mozza and Pizzeria Mozza, Dr. Brad Spellberg of Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, and Jean Halloran of Consumers Union.

Ranking Member Waxman Concerned by Chairman Upton’s Partisan Oversight of Obama Administration’s Health Care Law

Today Energy and Commerce Committee Ranking Member Henry A. Waxman sent a letter to Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Fred Upton to address recent criticism by the Republican leadership of the Obama Administration’s spending to educate the public on the benefits of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Committee Republicans ignored hundreds of millions of dollars of spending on the Medicare Part D public relations efforts by the Bush Administration, including the 1-800-MEDICARE blimp, but have criticized the Obama Administration’s much smaller expenditures on public education for the ACA.

Waxman sent a letter to Federal Trade Commission (FTC) Chairman Jon Leibowitz requesting an investigation into the causes of the current gasoline price spike in California. California gas prices have surged more than 50 cents per gallon over the past week, even though there has been no similar surge in gasoline prices nationwide.
