About the 9th District

Indiana's 9th Congressional District sits in southeastern and south-central Indiana.  It runs from Bloomington in the north out east near Cincinnati, OH, and then follows the majestic  and winding Ohio River south and west by way of Louisville, KY, before circling most of the Hoosier National Forest and areas just to the west. Major cities and towns include Bloomington, Clarksville, Columbus, Corydon, Huntingburg, Jasper, Jeffersonville, Lawrenceburg, Madison, New Albany, North Vernon, Paoli, Salem, Seymour, and Scottsburg.

Many of those cities and towns in the district are known for their history and beauty.  Corydon, for example, was the first state capital of Indiana, and the original State Capitol Building still stands in the middle of town.  Spencer County, in the southwestern part of the district, is where Abraham Lincoln grew up, and his childhood house is still preserved there at the Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial. Downtown Madison is the largest contiguous National Historic Landmark in the country, and it hosts a nationally recognized annual boat race, the Madison Regatta.  Papa John's started in Jeffersonville, the movie Hoosiers is based on Milan High School in Ripley County, and Columbus is known as "Athens on the Prairie" because of its internationally recognized modern architecture.  The 9th District is also home to Indiana University, based in Bloomington.

Much of the economy in the 9th District centers around a diverse manufacturing and agriculture base.  Among our employers are pharmaceutical and medical device companies like Cook Medical and Baxter in Bloomington and Hill-Rom in Batesville; nationally recognized commercial agricultural producers like Tyson Foods in Corydon and Rose Acre Farms in Seymour; Batesville Casket Company, which is the largest casket manufacturer in the world; barge maker Jeffboat, which is America's largest inland shipbuilding and repair facility;and military installations like Camp Atterbury and Crane Naval Surface Warfare Center (which both sit just outside the district but employ thousands of 9th District constituents).

Outside the cities, the district has much to offer those who love the outdoors and nature.  In addition to many scenic view along the Ohio River, most of the 200,000 acre Hoosier National Forest sits within the 9th District.  The district is also home to the three largest state parks in Indiana: Brown County, Versailles and Charlestown.  Other state parks include O'Bannon Woods, Lincoln, Clifty Falls, and Falls of the Ohio; the Muscatatuck National Wildlife Refuge also sits just outside of Seymour.
