Millions in unspent federal funds available to fix local roads

Dec 10, 2012

At my request, the Federal Highway Administration has confirmed that, as of November 29, 2012, the Commonwealth has $28.7 million available to fix roads and for other highway improvements.  Some of the project funds have been available since 2002.  Another $12.8 million, earmarked for Route 36 on Saipan, also remains unspent, according to FHWA.  In a letter to Governor Fitial, I encouraged him to do what he can to speed up expenditure of this total of $41.5 million at his disposal.  Spending this money would provide a much-needed shot in the arm for the Commonwealth economy, creating jobs for local workers and demand for goods and services from local businesses.  Smoother and safer roads will also improve the experience of our islands for tourists and reduce wear-and-tear on our vehicles.  FHWA provided a list of all 35 of the project awards.  $4.1 million is available for Rota, $1.2 million for Tinian, $21.4 million for Saipan, and an additional $2.1 million for projects having Commonwealth-wide application.
