Congressman Rivera Joins Call for President Obama to Meet with Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu

Washington, DC- Following media reports that President Barack Obama declined a meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during his visit to the United States later this month, Congressman David Rivera joined 127 of his House colleagues urging the President to accept the meeting.

“We are writing to urge you in the strongest terms to accept Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s request to meet with you during his visit to the United States this month.  We are astounded by your refusal to grant this request to one of our closest allies at such a critical time for that region.  The rejection of this request represents disturbing treatment of a vital partner and illustrates a lack of regard for the indispensable relationship between the United States and Israel and the current dynamics in the region which are essential to our national security,” the letter reads.

Congressman Rivera stressed the need to stand with America’s steadfast ally.

“Israel is a beacon of freedom in the Middle East, an area where liberty is especially stifled.  Both of our countries place a great emphasis on, and have a great respect for, democracy, human life and individual freedom.  As events continue to develop, it is of the utmost importance that we continue to support Israel and work alongside them to confront the many challenges plaguing the Middle East. The United States and Israel must stand together,” Congressman Rivera said.
