  1. Our office participates in the Inaugural Whistle Stop Tour of the new Amtrak service to our region
Photo: Yesterday our District Director, Shannon Kendrick, had the opportunity to participate in the Inaugural Whistle Stop Tour of the new Amtrak train that will serve South Hampton Roads. A great day for our region and the Commonwealth!

Because Democrats tend to vote for their own personal agendas, it is questionable that President Obama was elected with a mandate to do his will. Republicans who were elected, on the other hand, were elected with a mandate... the same commitment to fiscal and fiduciary responsibility as has been their core for decades. It would be imprudent for the Republics in the House to cave to the pressures of the Democrat majority in the Senate in order to prevent economic disaster. While many may blame the Republicans, the truth will win in the end. Obama won the election and couldn't put a stop to the economic nose dive. Americans haven't suffered enough yet to really get mad. They're spoiled. We can survive, and hopefully, while we still have our Second Amendment, we can bear arms. Don't be afraid to do what's right. Caving to those who wish this country ill is not an option.

    • Why does Medicare almost also pay first (as the primary) when a patient also has private/commercial insurance? How much could Medicare save, if it were always secondary?

    • I am convinced that we need to redefine the purpose of Social Security and Medicare. We need everyone to pay into the systems, but the wealthy don't need, nor should they receive, any benefits.

Rep Rigell, with the recent admission of the Navy admitting they "overshot" downsizing (see navy times this weeks edition) isn't it about time Congress holds hearings about this matter? They admittedly mismanaged the manning levels so they felt it was necessary to violate the contracts of nearly 3000 Sailors. Now they claim they overshot... Something does not add up. We are talking about the defense of our country here. Can we really afford to make this many mistakes with so much on the line?

  4. Teri and I are deeply grateful for the tireless service by our men and women in uniform. That service too often comes at a heavy cost to our military families. Today, we pause to honor and remember SO1 Nicholas Checque (SEAL) who gave his life on December 8th. May God bless his family this holiday season and always.
  5. Always an honor and a privilege to spend time with Gold Star families
Photo: Teri and I were deeply humbled to attend the Honor and Remember Gold Star Family Evening event on December 9. It’s always inspirational spending time with families of the fallen and listening to stories of their beloved heroes. We are ever mindful of the heavy price paid by our Gold Star families; grateful for the sacrifices they have made in defense of our freedoms; and honored to spend the evening with them during this holiday season. I am proud that the Honor and Remember flag is displayed prominently outside my office in Washington, DC. Click here to learn more about this special group: http://www.honorandremember.org/

  7. Teri joins me in wishing our friends and neighbors in the Jewish community a very Happy Hanukkah!
  8. We honor and pay tribute to more than 3,500 brave Americans that were killed or wounded 71 years ago today in the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. Our nation and our Armed Forces came together during this tragic time to defend our way of life at home and abroad. We will never forget these American patriots who paid the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms.
  9. This video is a sobering reminder of what is at stake as we work to put our country on a sound fiscal path. Please take a moment to watch and share your thoughts.
  10. Today I have the honor of participating in the inactivation ceremony of the USS Enterprise -- an historic symbol of America’s naval power for over half a century. It is a distinct privilege to have had the Enterprise homeported in the 2nd Congressional District of Virginia for the past 20 years. More than 100,000 Sailors have served on Big E, and today’s inactivation ceremony signals not only the conclusion of the ship’s distinguished service, but recognizes the extraordinary crew, past and present, and equally important, the families who support our men and women in uniform.
  11. I welcome the Department of the Interior's announcement that the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management has announced a Proposed Sale Notice to lease areas in waters off the coast of Virginia for commercial wind energy development. This is a step in the right direction and puts us closer to the goal of harvesting renewable energy to power the electric grid in Virginia and throughout the Mid-Atlantic states. A comprehensive solution and the key to unlocking jobs within Hampton Roads would be to move forward on wind energy while simultaneously lifting the ban on offshore oil and gas development.
  12. I fully support the bipartisan statement issued yesterday by Majority Leader Cantor and Minority Whip Hoyer on the United Nations General Assembly’s vote to elevate Palestine to non-member observer status. You can read the full statement here:
  13. I supported Governor Bob McDonnell’s request earlier this month that President Obama issue a Major Disaster Declaration which would allow the Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA) to release funds to help with Hurricane Sandy cleanup and restoration. I was disappointed to learn Thursday that while the President agreed to some of the funding, he chose to withhold Individual Assistance ...
from Accomack County. This means Accomack County residents whose homes were totally destroyed by Hurricane Sandy will not get the relief they need. Virginia taxpayers whose homes have been destroyed by this disaster should be eligible for the same relief offered to the taxpayers of Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York, and New Jersey. While the damage in those states may be more wide spread, the acute damage to individual homes in Accomack County is just as severe. I urge President Obama to reconsider his decision with respect to Accomack County, and in the meantime, I join the Governor in encouraging good-hearted Virginians to help Accomack residents by donating to the Virginia Disaster Relief Fund.

  14. Welcome home to the men and women aboard USS Fort McHenry! Congratulations on a successful five month deployment to the Sixth Fleet Area of Operations in the Eastern Atlantic, Mediterranean, and Black Seas. We are deeply grateful for your service and dedication to our country.
  15. Last week we asked the district: “What is the top priority for you and your family in the final fiscal cliff deal?” More than 30% said: “Finding a bipartisan way to avert disaster while addressing out-of-control spending and our revenue shortfalls.” See the full results of last week’s poll and prior polls here:
  16. As the negotiations in Washington continue, Congressman Rigell remains committed to finding a solution that puts our nation on a better fiscal path. Any agreement should: 1) stop the defense sequester; 2) sharply reduce our historic levels of spending; and 3) make our tax code flatter and fairer, thereby generating more revenue to run our Republic.
  17. Teri and I are deeply humbled by the heavy price paid by many of our service members to preserve liberty and freedom here in our Republic. Today, we honor and remember Petty Officer 1st Class Kevin R. Ebbert who was based in Virginia Beach. May God bless him and his family.
  18. Did you know: small businesses represent 97.8 percent of all employers in Virginia. Tomorrow is 'Small Business Saturday;' please consider getting out and supporting the small businesses that drive our economy! http://ow.ly/fq2lD
