Washington, DC – Congressman Steve Rothman (D-NJ), a
member of the House Appropriations Committee, released the following statement
in celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month:
Hispanic-Americans share with
all Americans our common goals of freedom, opportunity, and a chance to build a
better life. As the most rapidly growing minority group in the United
States, Hispanic-Americans contribute profoundly to our American culture and
economy. With more than 174,000 Hispanic-Americans living in my Congressional
District, comprising roughly 26 percent of our total population, I know the
important role that Hispanic-Americans play in our communities.
America has always been an
immigrant nation and we must never forget that. Today, as we strive to ensure
equal opportunities in all aspects of society, we must realize that future
generations will judge us by how well this country treats its newest
immigrants. From job creation, to education, to health care, and other issues
that directly affect quality of life, America must fulfill its promise to offer
equal opportunities for Hispanic-Americans, and all immigrants, to achieve a
better life.
My grandparents were all immigrants. None
of them spoke English. My brother, sister, and I are the first generation in my
family to go to college. I know the contributions that immigrants make to
enriching and strengthening this country. The new cultures, the new blood, the
enthusiasm, and drive to succeed are all vitally important qualities that
immigrants have brought to America since our founding. That is why I offer my
best wishes to the Hispanic-American community on the occasion of this year's
Hispanic Heritage Month.
Hispanic
Heritage month officially began on September 15th, which is the
anniversary of the independence of five Latin American
countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. In
addition, Mexico and Chile celebrate their independence days on September 16th
and September 18th, respectively.

Los
hispano-americanos comparten con nosotros las mismas metas de libertad,
oportunidad y el deseo de crear una mejor vida. Como una de las minorías
de mayor crecimiento en los Estados Unidos, los hispano-americanos contribuyen
profundamente a nuestra cultura estadounidense y a nuestra economía. Con
más de 174,000 hispano-americanos viviendo en mi distrito congresional,
formando aproximadamente el 26 porciento de la población, yo reconozco la importancia
de la participación hispanoamericana en nuestra comunidad.
Los
Estados Unidos siempre ha sido una nación de inmigrantes y nunca podemos
olvidarnos de eso hecho. Hoy, a la vez que continuamos trabajando para
obtener igualdad de oportunidades en todos los aspectos de la sociedad, tenemos
que tener en cuenta que nuestras generaciones futuras nos juzgarán en como
hemos tratado a nuestros inmigrantes. La creación de empleo, la
educación, el cuidado medico, son temas que directamente afectan la calidad de
vida de todos, y los Estados Unidos tiene que cumplir con la promesa de otorgar
estos derechos sin parcialidad.
Mis
abuelos, fuerón inmigrantes. Ninguno de ellos hablaba inglés. Mi
hermano, hermana y yo fuimos la primera generación en mi familia que
atendió la universidad. Yo sé las contribuciones que los inmigrantes
hacen para enriquecer y fortalezer a este país. Las nuevas culturas, la
nueva sangre, el entusiasmo y la energía son calidades importantes que todos
los inmigrantes han traído a los Estados Unidos desde su inicio. Es por
eso que yo ofrezco mis mejores deseos a la comunidad hispano-americana en este
Mes de la Herencia Hispana.
El Mes de la
Herencia Hispana comenzó oficialmente el 15 de septiember, en el aniversario de
la independencia de cinco países latinoamericanos: Costa Rica, El Salvador,
Guatemala, Honduras y Nicaragua. México y Chile celebran sus
independencias el 16 y 18 de septiembre respectivamente.
