East Rutherford, NJ – On November 15, 2011, Congressman Steve Rothman (D-NJ), a member of the House Appropriations Committee, thanked the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey for working with him to provide more than $18 million in federal funds to soundproof Henry P. Becton Regional High School in East Rutherford, NJ. This money comes from the Federal Airport Improvement Program, which is funded by airlines and airline passenger surcharges for soundproofing and other purposes. This means that not a single cent of local taxpayer dollars will be used to pay for the $18 million installation of state of the art, central air conditioning, as well as the soundproofing of all windows and doors, plus new heating and ventilation and other improvements at Becton High School.

“Learning is hard enough without the roar of jet engines overhead. The $18,176,925 in federal funds that have been secured to soundproof Becton High school will ensure that these students will no longer be forced to endure the deafening sound of aircraft landing at and taking off from Teterboro Airport and Newark Liberty International Airport,” said Congressman Rothman. “I very much thank the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and the FAA for working to make this project a reality, and I am proud to announce that construction will begin this year.”

Founded in 1971, Becton High School is located 10 miles from Newark Liberty International Airport and just one mile from Teterboro Airport, where there have been more than a combined 1.6 million flights since 2007. The $18,176,925 in federal funding was secured by Congressman Rothman through the FAA’s Airport Improvement Program.
