Washington, DC – On April 21, 2011, Congressman Steve Rothman (D-NJ) hosted the 2011 Congressional Art Competition at Hackensack Cultural Center in Hackensack, NJ. 69 students submitted artwork for the competition from Bergen, Hudson and Passaic Counties.

At the end of the evening, Congressman Rothman announced the following student winners. First Place: Nina Yoshida, a student at Bergen Academies High School, for her painting, “When Blue, I Game;” Second Place: Cynthia Chau, a student at Bergen Academies High School for her sketch, “Lost in the Music;” Third Place: ShweThee Kale, a student at Ridgefield Park High School, for her sketch, “Serenity.” Honorable Mentions: Shannon Levin of Bergen Academies High School, Kimberly Roman of North Bergen High School, Xin Liu of Teaneck High School, Mercedes Lois of Kearny High School, Veronica Nardello of Rutherford High School, Anthony Tamburro of Lodi High School, and Pratik Shah of Dwight Morrow School.
“It is extremely gratifying to offer these very talented young people in our community the opportunity to express their artistic gifts in our annual Congressional Art Competition. I applaud all the young artists who participated in the 2011 Congressional Art Competition and I look forward to showcasing the winning pieces from the 9th District in my offices and, in Nina Yoshida’s case, the U.S. Capitol for the next year,” said Congressman Steve Rothman. “I am particularly grateful to their parents, teachers and schools for giving these outstanding young people the chance to explore and develop their artistic interests.”
Congressman Rothman, a long-time supporter of the arts and member of the Congressional Art Caucus, has hosted this competition every year since his election to Congress in 1996. The Congressional Art Competition is an annual nationwide high school art competition sponsored by the Congressional Arts Caucus and initiated by Members of Congress in their districts. It is an opportunity for students across the country to exhibit their artwork and receive national recognition.
