The New York Times today editorialized on our deficient election system and the urgent need for reform. This November, countless Americans spent hours on end in long lines at the polls, and millions more faced recently erected barriers to voter registration. It's time to change this and stand up for all Americans' right to vote. In particular, the editorial points out one solution:

 

WASHINGTON – Rep. George Miller (D-Calif.), the senior Democratic member of the House Education and the Workforce Committee, issued the following statement after the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported today the United States economy added 184,000 private-sector jobs in October, marking the 32nd straight month of private-sector job growth or more than 5.4 million jobs.

Good news for consumers this week--the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) has just released new rules for supervising large debt collection firms, marking the first time that the industry will be subject to federal oversight.

Washington, D.C.  -- Rep. George Miller (D- Martinez) said today he was very disappointed that the House of Representatives blocked a Democratic plan to protect tax cuts for middle class families and warned that taxes for the middle class are likely to go up next year if Republicans in Congress refuse to compromise.   

WASHINGTON, D.C. Northern California Members of Congress today called on the House leadership to immediately pass a long-term transportation jobs bill. In a letter to the House leadership, the members highlighted the Department of Labor’s April 2012 Jobs Report which shows that last month alone, close to 17,000 jobs were lost in the transportation sector. Traditionally, the warm spring and summer months are when transportation and construction jobs are at their peak.

Washington, DC – U.S. Rep George Miller (D-Martinez) today called on House Republican leaders to drop their plan to take up a job-killing transportation bill and instead bring up a bi-partisan bill the Senate approved this afternoon to fix our roads, bridges and mass transit systems, which could create more than 2 million jobs.
