More than 300 men and women attended Congressman Jim Moran’s 2012 Women’s Issues Conference on Saturday, September 29, 2012 at Kenmore Middle School in Arlington. The event featured keynote speaker Kathleen Matthews, current chief communications and public affairs officer for Marriott International and former Channel 7 News anchor and host of the television show Working Woman.

Seminars provided attendees opportunities to learn and engage in issues that affect women daily. Below is a brief summary of this year’s seminars. A full list of seminars and panelist bios can be found here.
Living Healthy, Living Happy, Living Longer
George Mason University and Inova Health Systems co-hosted this seminar on two important aspects of healthy living: breast health and nutrition. Surgeons from Inova talked about risk factors and advances in early detection. Chef Peter Schoebel demonstrated ways to modify recipes to make them healthier.
Living Your Ideal Life: Balancing Family, Career, and Personal Needs
A lively panel discussion, moderated by Karyn Moran and featuring Deborah Kahn, Ph.D., Jennifer Vasquez, Dagny Evans, and Kiersten Todt Coon, focused on the challenges women face in prioritizing their lives.
Car Care 101
Roy Krebs helped attendees navigate their way under the hood of a car. Roy showed participants when tires need to be replaced and how to check oil.
Human Trafficking: the Global and Local Impact
Heather Heiman from the Tahirih Justice Center spoke to a standing room only group on human trafficking. In 2008, the United Nations estimated nearly 2.5 million people from 127 different countries are being trafficked into 137 countries around the world.
Communicating Success, Networking Your Future
This session highlighted ways to develop professional and personal relationships through style, communication, and networking skills. Annette Harris urged participants to focus on apparel fit, fabric, color, and adding a wow factor. Theresa Caldwell gave tips on creating an “elevator speech,” a colorful, yet brief, introduction. Rose Harper discussed how the game of golf has opened many doors for her, and given her access and opportunities to build key relationships.
Making Your Voice Heard
Delegate Charniele Herring discussed how she became an advocate and stressed the importance of doing your homework, building coalitions, being persistent, and not burning bridges.
