Marino Calls for OSHA Investigation

Reports of OSHA staff in Central Susquehanna Valley exceeding authority, ethical boundaries

Williamsport, PA – On Monday, October 22, 2012, Congressman Tom Marino (R-PA) called for action in support of homebuilders in his District after learning of allegations of improper and excessive actions taken by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s (OSHA) staff in Pennsylvania’s Central Susquehanna Valley.  

In a letter addressed to OSHA Assistant Secretary David Morris Michaels, Rep. Marino notes the multiple reports he and his staff have received in recent weeks.  The specific instances mentioned in the letter range from improperly documented citations to sexual harassment and employee detainment.

“I fully support the role of OSHA in reducing workplace hazards, but the reports of misbehavior by OSHA inspectors are stunning and OSHA should immediately and thoroughly investigate these incidents,” said Rep. Marino.  “Those tasked with enforcing the laws and regulations of our nation have a duty to the American people to carry out their jobs with the highest level of efficiency and professionalism.”  Marino continued, “Improper or abusive actions by any governmental entity will not be tolerated.”

In the letter, Rep. Marino requested that OSHA review the actions taken by inspectors in Pennsylvania’s Central Susquehanna Valley and that OSHA reiterate to its inspectors the proper policies and procedures regarding accusations of sexual harassment.  Additionally, the Congressman requested OSHA take steps to reduce instances of excessive government interference and misconduct.
