Women Warriors Recognized In North Kingstown

Nov 12, 2012 Issues: Armed Services, Veterans

Rhode Island’s women veterans were honored Monday at a women warriors luncheon in North Kingstown benefiting the Holly Charette House and Operation Stand Down Rhode Island, both of which help veterans overcome challenging situations.

Congressman Jim Langevin and U.S. Senator Sheldon Whitehouse expressed gratitude to the current and former service members in attendance and special recognition was given to Gold Star families who have lost a child in service to the country. The event at Quidnessett Country Club featured Regina and Ed Roberts, parents of Holly Charette, a Cranston High School East graduate who was killed in Iraq in 2005 when her convoy was struck by a suicide bomber. Regina and Ed have honored Holly’s legacy through efforts to assist returning warriors.

The afternoon included a panel discussion featuring Rhode Island women: Col. Susan Luz, U.S. Army, ret; SFC Amy Slater, RI Army National Guard; and Specialist Tasha Ludovici, RI Army National Guard.

“This wonderful event not only recognizes the many Rhode Island women who have selflessly sacrificed to serve our nation, but also pays them the ultimate tribute by supporting organizations that work to give our veterans the help they need when they come home,” said Langevin. “It is particularly important that we all have the opportunity to give thanks to our Gold Star families, such as Regina and Ed Roberts, who demonstrate remarkable courage by carrying on the memories of their children through initiatives like the Holly Charette House and The Cpl. Holly Charette Scholarship Fund.”
