Washington, Nov 30 -

Congresswoman Mazie K. Hirono (HI-02) today announced her nomination of 29 students from Hawaii’s 2nd Congressional District to the U.S. military service academies’ Class of 2017.  The nominees are now being considered by the four academies for final appointments for the fall semester of 2013.

“I nominate these young women and men with great pride as they collectively represent the finest qualities Hawaii has to offer – intelligence, dedication, and commitment combined with the Aloha and ‘Can Do’ Spirit I know they’ll bring to their future endeavors.  Based on their applications, we already know these young adults have put in the years of hard work necessary to be considered for acceptance to one of our nation’s military academies,” said Congresswoman Hirono.  “I have high hopes and expectations for them all, and wish each of them my best.”

The four American service academies are the U.S. Air Force Academy, the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, the U.S. Naval Academy, and the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. Each year, U.S. Representatives and Senators make nominations to the four service academies. Each academy admissions office then selects from the congressional nominations. To be eligible for nomination, each student submitted an application and references and met certain scholastic, leadership, community service, and extra-curricular requirements. Nomination does not guarantee appointment.
