CONGRESSWOMAN SHEILA JACKSON LEE REFLECTS ON THE BOMBINGS AT PEARL HARBOR

Washington, Dec 7 -

Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee, a Senior Member of the House Homeland Security Committee, released the following statement in honor of the bombings at Pearl Harbor 71 years ago:

“On a Sunday morning 71 years ago, the residents of Pearl Harbor were awakened by bombings raining down on them from the skies above in a surprise attack. This day will  always be remember by all Americans  as it tested the resilience of our Armed Forces and the will of our Nation.

“I salute the veterans and survivors of Pearl Harbor who continue to inspire us.  Despite overwhelming odds, they heroically fought back against the enemy, inspired our nation and put us on the path to victory.  They are proudly known as members of that Greatest Generation.  These are men and women, who overcame the Depression, crossed oceans and stormed the beaches to defeat fascism, and later turned adversaries into our closest allies.

“When the guns fell silent, they came home, went to school on the G.I. Bill, and built the largest middle class in history and the strongest economy in the world.  They remind us that no challenge is too great when Americans stand as one.  All of us owe these men and women a profound debt of gratitude for protecting our freedoms and the standard of living we enjoy today.

“The battle at Pearl Harbor reminds us of the tremendous sacrifices our troops and their families make.  We are grateful to our military for their defense of this democracy.  Our thoughts and prayers are with the men and women currently deployed—we hope for their safe and speedy return.

“Today, we honor the more than 3,500 Americans killed or wounded during that deadly attack and pay tribute to the heroes whose courage ensured our Nation would recover from such a vicious blow.”
