Immigration

Immigration is a complex issue with no easy solution. Any changes made in policy on this matter will have sweeping implications on the current immigration system. I believe that effective immigration reform must help strengthen and enforce our current laws, but it must also be consistent and fair. The input of American citizens, legal immigrants, as well as the educational institutions and businesses that rely on an expanding workforce must all weigh in.

Over the years, there have been many bills considered that would make changes to various immigration policies. However, at this time, current proposals do not comprehensively address this issue. I believe that we must enforce our existing immigration laws, including deporting illegal immigrants who have been apprehended or convicted of a crime. Further, we must strengthen the abilities of our border enforcement agents to prevent immigrants from illegally entering the United States.

Immigration can be a tumultuous issue involving a variety of emotions, facts, and figures. As such, I believe it is important for Congress to proceed cautiously when addressing immigration reform. As a nation founded by immigrants, we are forced to balance legal immigration issues while continuing to enforce and strengthen laws combating illegal immigrants. It would be particularly detrimental to our country to adopt a policy that encourages further unlawful behavior and punishes those who carefully and patiently work within the established system.
