Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I find information and tools to start my own business?
The United States Small Business Administration (SBA) has a website that includes information about starting and managing a business.

Illinois’ Official Homepage can also provide you with the tools and resources to start your own business on their Small Business webpage.

What SBA funding programs are available?
The SBA offers a variety of financing options for small businesses. Please note that the SBA's assistance usually is in the form of loan guaranties. This means that the SBA guarantees loans are made by banks and other private lenders to small business clients. More information on SBA loans and grants can be found on their Financial Assistance webpage. Plus, you can search for Business Loans, Grants, and Financing through their Search page.

Additionally, their Business Loan Application checklist includes common documents needed to apply for most loan programs.

Are there federal grants to start or expand a business?
The SBA does not offer grants to start or expand small businesses, although it does offer a wide variety of loan programs.

While the SBA does offer a limited number of grant programs, these grants are generally designed to expand and enhance organizations that provide small business management, technical, or financial assistance. These grants generally support non-profit organizations, intermediary lending institutions, and state and local governments.

How do I find business licenses and permits?
Every business needs one or more federal, state or local license or permit to operate. Licenses can range from a basic operating license to very specific permits.

Regulations vary by industry, state, and locality, so it's very important to understand the licensing rules where your business is located. Not complying with licensing and permitting regulations can lead to expensive fines and put your business at serious risk.

The SBA’s Business Licenses and Permits Search Tool allows you to get a listing of federal, state and local permits, licenses, and registrations you'll need to run a business.

Are there counseling and training programs available?
The SBA offers free online training for Small Businesses. In addition, there are SBA sponsored organizations that provide counseling and training programs. Information on these training programs can be found the SBA’s website.

Are there special small business assistance programs for disadvantaged, veteran, or women-owned businesses?
Yes. The SBA administers several programs based on a variety of conditions and specific business scenarios. For information on these programs visit their Small Business Certification and Audiences webpage.
