Timothy V. Johnson serves as the United States Representative for the 15th Congressional District of Illinois. He was elected for a sixth term in the U.S. House of Representatives in November 2010. Tim is a proponent of small government, reducing our national debt, and fighting for the agricultural community of Illinois.

About Tim

For over thirty years, Congressman Timothy V. Johnson was an Urbana lawyer, small businessman, realtor, farm operator, and educator. Elected to Illinois’ Fifteenth Congressional District in 2001, Johnson had the unique capability to bring a variety of experiences to Washington, D.C. Owning and operating small businesses and farms gives him an understanding of the challenges facing families and small businesses across communities throughout Illinois.

Personal Life

Tim was born on July 23, 1946 in Champaign, Illinois. He graduated from Urbana High School and continued his studies at West Point for a short time, before completing his degree in history at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. In 1972, Tim graduated from the University of Illinois College of Law, elected to the National Legal Honor Society. He has nine children and eleven grandchildren. Currently, Congressman Johnson and his family reside in Urbana, Illinois.

Public Service

While still in law school, Tim began his career in public service, winning a seat on the Urbana City Council in 1971. After four years of demonstrating a unique ability to connect with the people of central Illinois and crafting sound policies to their benefit, Tim was urged by community leaders to run for the Illinois State Legislature. Elected in 1976, Congressman Johnson held that seat in the Statehouse for more than two decades until he was elected to Congress in November of 2000 to represent the 15th District of Illinois. He still holds his seat after four reelection campaigns.

Congressman Johnson is dedicated to quality public service in Washington, D.C. to ensure that citizens in the twenty-two counties of the District have the best representation and service possible. Congressman Johnson takes pride in devoting weekends and breaks to extensively traveling the District, meeting with elected officials, stopping in to restaurants and coffee shops, and making numerous phone calls to constituents to ensure he stays in touch with those he serves.

Congressman Johnson has been named one of the most independently voting Republicans in the United States House of Representatives. He believes the best way to get things done is to bring Democrats and Republicans together to develop relationships with one another, discuss their differences, and find areas of agreement. This is why he co-founded the Center Aisle Caucus in 2005. Johnson believes that Americans want to believe in a government that can find solutions. While it is important to advocate strongly for his beliefs, Congressman Johnson feels it is equally as important to respect Congressional colleagues to get things done.

Legislative Accomplishments

Congressman Johnson has established a strong record of constituent service. While responding to 15th District residents' needs is a top priority for Tim, he has also been a strong and independent voice on Capitol Hill in creating new farm policy, lowering taxes, bringing federal dollars home to Illinois universities and community colleges, protecting Social Security, fighting for affordable prescription medication, and protecting our environment. He has been a leading advocate for the expansion of bio-fuel use and development and he has paid special attention to the needs of Veterans.

Tim will continue opposing tax hikes, promoting fiscal responsibility, and upholding conservative, common sense values in the United States Congress. Most of all, Tim wants to rekindle the spark in the nation's agricultural economy that is so vital to the health of the region, nation and world.
