    • Congressman, if your taxes were to go up, could you still pay your mortgage and provide a descent life for yourself and family? My annual household income is about 45K. Please do the right thing.

Regarding the 2013 Agriculture Appropriations Bill (H.R. 5973) To Our Representatives, Please join Representative Peter DeFazio (D-OR) in opposing the “Farmers Assurance Provision” (Section 733) of the 2013 Agriculture Appropriations Bill. The rider is as follows: "Sec. 733. In the event that a determination of non-regulated status made pursuant to section 411 of the Plant Protection Act is or has been invalidated or vacated, the Secretary of Agriculture shall, notwithstanding any other provision of law, upon request by a farmer, grower, farm operator, or producer, immediately grant temporary permit(s) or temporary deregulation in part, subject to necessary and appropriate conditions consistent with section 411(a) or 412(c) of the Plant Protection Act, which interim conditions shall authorize the movement, introduction, continued cultivation, commercialization and other specifically enumerated activities and requirements, including measures designed to mitigate or minimize potential adverse environmental effects, if any, relevant to the Secretary’s evaluation of the petition for non-regulated status, while ensuring that growers or other users are able to move, plant, cultivate, introduce into commerce and carry out other authorized activities in a timely manner: Provided, That all such conditions shall be applicable only for the interim period necessary for the Secretary to complete any required analyses or consultations related to the petition for non-regulated status: Provided further, That nothing in this section shall be construed as limiting the Secretary’s authority under section 411, 412 and 414 of the Plant Protection Act." http://www.opencongress.org/bill/112-h5973/text This rider would grant GMO creators immunity from federal law by allowing them to plant genetically modified crops, even if a federal court has ordered the planting be halted until an Environmental Impact Statement is completed. This rider would make judicial action to protect farmer and consumer choice toothless. This is absolutely unacceptable. Please join Rep. DeFazio by signing-on to his "Dear Colleague" letter and support our right to grow or not to grow GMOs in our community. Secondly, please push a new bill requiring the labeling of GMOs in our marketplaces. We have a right as consumers to know what we are putting on our families' tables at mealtime. Organics already carry special labeling (although the truth in those labels are also subject to question), why is there such an argument over labeling GMOs? Did you know that genetically engineered foods don't have to be safety tested or labeled. Regulatory industries worldwide rely on companies selling GM products to voluntarily submit reports rather than independent testing. Worse yet, the FDA conducts no premarket review or approval, as long as the biotech company concludes that the genetically engineered food is not "materially different" from normal food. There hasn't been enough independent research to say definitively what harm or benefit these GMOs could potentially do. Lastly, please tell USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack to reject Dow’s Agent Orange Corn. Remember Agent Orange? The 2,4-D chemical concoction commissioned by the U.S. Army to defoliate jungles and destroy food crops during the Vietnam War? Within a week, the USDA could approve Dow's new "Enlist" brand corn, genetically engineered to resist massive doses of the herbicide 2,4-D. A large body of evidence indicates major health problems result from exposure to 2,4-D, including cancer, reproductive problems, neurotoxicity, and auto-immune disorders. And 2,4-D is devastating to the environment. It’s currently the seventh largest source of dioxin pollution in the US. The use of this toxic herbicide is projected to increase 50-fold if the USDA approves this crop. That essentially means a rubber stamp for Dow's Agent Orange corn. Our state of Tennessee has a grand agricultural history, and these big GMO companies are putting the farmers and consumers at risk for profit regardless of environmental or health concerns. Please protect the residents and farmers of Tennessee. Please say "NO!" to all of the above. Sincerely, Cassandra J.

    • I also sent the message as an email to Mr Fincher. I, for one, am fed up with lying politicians. The following information has been submitted: Name: George Roberson Address: Trenton, TN 38382 Email: grob705@ Issue: WEBOTH Message Subject: Supporting Lamar Alexander Message Text: A few of out here in the state are watching your every move when it comes to supporting the RINO Lamar Alexander. Please be aware, anything you do to support the RINO will result in one less vote for you for myself and my fellow patriots. We are sick and tired of lying politicians who get to Washington then turn their backs on the folks who got them elected. Don't make the mistakes the Alexander has made. His record has no defense, period. That’s also why Alexander chose Rep. Jimmy Duncan Jr., R-Knoxville, as his campaign chairman and named Gov. Bill Haslam, Lt. Gov. Ron Ramsey, House Speaker Beth Harwell and U.S. Reps. Marsha Blackburn, Phil Roe, Diane Black, Stephen Fincher and Chuck Fleischmann honorary campaign co-chairmen. In other words, Alexander co-opted pretty much everyone he could think of with the name recognition and the fundraising ability to seriously challenge him — including Duncan and Blackburn, the two most legitimate

  11. In the United States, freedom is earned from one generation to the next by the men and women who proudly serve in our Armed Forces. The extraordinary sacrifices made by our military are why we enjoy so many individual liberties today. On this Veterans Day, we honor all of those brave men and women both here and abroad. Thank you for your service.
