Congressman Flake Applauds Passage of STEM Jobs Act

Keeping more STEM Graduates of U.S. Universities in the Country Will Help Keep U.S. Competitive Globally

Washington, D.C., Nov 30 - Republican Congressman Jeff Flake, who represents Arizona’s Sixth District, today applauded the House passage of H.R. 6429, the STEM Jobs Act. The bill makes up to 55,000 visas available to foreign-born recipients of advanced degrees from United States universities in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math.

"The U.S. for decades has been a hub for technological innovation. Ensuring that more highly-skilled STEM graduates of U.S. universities remain in the country will help maintain that special standing,” said Flake. “This measure is good for businesses, good for our overall economy, and good for keeping the U.S. competitive globally.”

In the last three Congresses, Congressman Flake introduced the Stopping Trained-in-America Ph.D.s from Leaving the Economy (STAPLE) Act, which would exempt from visa quotas foreign students who have earned a Ph.D. degree in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics from a U.S. university and have a job offer in the U.S.
