Fleming Condemns Attacks in Egypt and Libya
“We must never be ashamed of, or apologize for, our freedoms of religion and speech.”

Washington, D.C., Sep 12 - U.S. Representative John Fleming, M.D. (LA-4) released the following statement in the aftermath of yesterday’s attacks on the American consulate in Benghazi, Libya and the U.S. Embassy in Cairo, Egypt:

“What occurred yesterday in Libya and Egypt is an unmitigated tragedy and my heart goes out to the families of those who were killed at our consulate. It is my hope that those responsible for the attacks will be brought to justice.

“The hatred toward our country that is behind the killing of innocent Americans and the destruction of the American flag seems to be a hatred for the freedoms of our great land, including the freedom of speech and the freedom of religion. These are not freedoms to be ashamed of, to equivocate, or to apologize for. And while purveyors of terror may celebrate their murderous intolerance of differing religious beliefs and divergent speech, the United States must protect free speech, even when it is perceived as hurting so-called religious feelings.”

Dr. John Fleming is a physician and small business owner and represents the 4th Congressional District of Louisiana. He is Chairman of the Natural Resources Subcommittee on Fisheries, Wildlife, Oceans and Insular Affairs and is a member of the House Armed Services Committee.
