Cardin visits the American Red Cross headquarters to thank personnel, volunteers for their service

BALTIMORE -- U.S. Senator Ben Cardin (D-MD) today visited the American Red Cross Headquarters of the Maryland/Delaware Region for a tour and to thank American Red Cross personnel and volunteers for their service during Hurricane Sandy.

“Our region and our nation owe so much to the American Red Cross because you provide often critical assistance to Americans in times of real catastrophe or crises,” Senator Cardin told a group of Red Cross volunteers from around the country.   “Red Cross volunteers embody what is best of America. You make us very proud and I want to thank you for all you have done for our state and our nation.”

 The American Red Cross of the Chesapeake Region provides basic needs to disaster victims in the Maryland and Delaware region following a disaster, including emergency shelter, food, clothing and counseling.  Two hundred Red Cross workers from around the country have been deployed to the Maryland/Delaware area to provide disaster assistance in the wake of Hurricane Sandy.  

Since Hurricane Sandy, the American Red Cross of Chesapeake Region has mobilized more than 2,300 disaster workers who have served more than 100,800 meals and snacks. On Tuesday night, October 30, more than 9,000 people spent the night in 171 Red Cross shelters, including 400 who spent the night in Maryland shelters.
