National Capital Region
Prince George’s and Montgomery counties ring the Nation’s Capital and provide many of the workers for the federal government. The region is home to important federal facilities such as the National Institutes of Health, the Food and Drug Administration, the National Institute of Standards and Technology and the Bethesda Naval Hospital. The National Capital Region also has some of the most educated and highly trained workers in our nation, many working in the scientific or biological research fields. Andrews Air Force Base in Prince George’s County is home to Air Force One and the President fleet of aircraft. Residents and visitors to the region often use Washington’s Metro – the second-busiest rail system in the nation – that serves the entire region.

- Montgomery County is home to the C&O Canal, which was a major means of transportation during the 19th Century.
- Montgomery County hosts many federal facilities: The National Institutes of Health, Food & Drug Administration, Health and Human Services, National Institute of Standards and Technology and the Bethesda Navy Hospital.
- Montgomery County has the second highest number of biological research companies in the nation.
- Prince George's County is the site of Samuel Morse's first experimental telegraph message and the country's first telegraph line.
- Bigger than a breadbox: If Prince George's County were a city, it would be the 13th largest city in the United States. That's larger than San Francisco, Atlanta or Boston.
- Prince George's Co. has both the country's first U.S. Postal Air Mail Service and first African-American owned and operated airport (The Columbia Air Center, est. 1941).
- The Joint Base Andrews Naval Air Facility, MD, or Andrews Air Force Base, is located eight miles from D.C. and is home to Air Force One and the presidential fleet of aircraft.
