Internships

Congressional offices provide excellent opportunities for students to learn more about the American system of government. Although my constituents receive priority, applicants do not have to be residents of the 23rd Congressional District.

Please note that I typically receive many internship applications. The internships are unpaid, but I will be glad to help you if you are requesting credit for your internship through your school or university.

Washington, D.C. Office

In my Washington, DC office, internships run throughout the fall, spring or summer semesters for college students. The hours are flexible to accommodate students’ hectic course schedules, but generally run 9:00AM to 6:00PM when Congress is in session, and 9:00AM to 5:00PM when not in session.

In Washington, intern responsibilities will vary. Interns will be asked to answer phones, run errands, research legislation for me and legislative staff, attend hearings and briefings and answer constituent letters on various issues before the House. As a result, interns learn a great deal about the legislative process and the many functions of a congressional office.

If you are interested in interning in my Washington, D.C. office, please email your Internship Application Form to CappsCA23InboundFax@mail.house.gov. Please include your cover letter in the body of the email and attach the completed Internship Application Form, your resume, letters of recommendation and writing sample(s).

Central and South Coast Offices

In my Central and South Coast offices, interns are asked to do a variety of things, including day-to-day office work such as answering phones, writing letters and assisting with media clips. In addition, interns may be assigned to assist in various constituent case work or work on District-based projects of importance.

If you are interested in obtaining an internship in one of my district offices, please print and fill out my Intern Application Form and fax it, along with your resume and other supplemental materials, to the appropriate office.

If you have additonal questions about working as an intern in my office, please contact the office you are interested in directly.
