Capps Announces $125,000 in Federal Funding for San Luis Obispo Friday Night Live Partnership

San Luis Obispo, CA – Today, Congresswoman Lois Capps (CA-23) announced that the San Luis Obispo Friday Night Live Partnership has been awarded a $125,000 grant from the Drug-Free Communities (DFC) Support Program, administered by the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP). With twenty-four chapters, the San Luis Obispo County Friday Night Live Partnership’s youth development and substance abuse program is present in middle and high schools throughout the County.

The San Luis Obispo County Friday Night Live Partnership (SLOFNLP) has been doing great work in our local communities for over twenty years, keeping our kids drug free and helping them develop healthy habits that  will last a lifetime,” Congresswoman Lois Capps. “Our children are our future and we owe it to our country to ensure that we invest in them and give them the tools they need to lead to lead successful and productive lives.”

This innovative grant project addresses the growing concern of substance abuse among those students entering the college environment. By replicating the successful Friday Night Live model at colleges and universities, young people are being engaged during that critical transition between high school and young adulthood.

The program's success is built on empowering students to redefine college culture and reduce the negative impacts of alcohol and other drug use amongst a vulnerable population," says Frank Warren, Prevention & Outreach Manager for the San Luis Obispo County Behavioral Health Department. “The grant has allowed Friday Night Live in San Luis Obispo County to expand its partnership to  include Cal Poly and Cuesta College faculty and student leaders interested  in addressing the issues of substance abuse, binge drinking, and overdose  which, sadly, impact many campus communities.”
