Congressman Cuellar at The Pastry House, a bakery locally owned in Laredo, on Small Business Saturday. Together, the country spent $5.5 billion at independent merchants on Nov. 24. Continuing to support small businesses is a way for us to support this vital sector of our economy – one which creates good paying jobs with the best interest of the local neighborhood in mind.

Congressman Cuellar announced a $974,118 grant for the 406th Judicial District Adult Drug Court Program which will provide treatment for substance abuse victims. This adult drug court program will enhance the education and treatment services provided to men and women struggling with drug and alcohol addiction.

Congressman Cuellar joined TX State Rep. Raymond, Sheriff Cuellar, Texas DPS and other law enforcement officials at the groundbreaking of the Laredo Crime Lab. In 2009, Cuellar was able to secure $250,000 in federal funds to equip a firearms testing range and a freezer to store DNA evidence. The state of the art facility will provide controlled substance analysis, firearms/tool mark examinations and DNA analysis, keeping law enforcement officials from having to send evidence 100-150 miles away for testing.

Congressman Cuellar and Dr. James Ponce, Superintendent of McAllen ISD (left), joined 1st grade students in an exercising activity at Seguin Elementary School in McAllen, TX. Recently, McAllen ISD received $1.9 million from the Department of Education to increase the percentage of students meeting state physical standards, implement health, and nutrition programs and begin a tracking system to monitor student success.

Last year, Congressman Cuellar announced a $42.9 million grant for Texas A&M; International University’s “Gear Up” Program – designed to follow and mentor 8000 7th graders across 19 school districts in South Texas until their first year of college in hopes of increasing higher graduation rates and the number of students entering college. Today, he joined those 8000 students for a pep rally to kick off “Gear Up.” Congressman Cuellar expressed his faith in the student's abilities and wished nothing but success for each of them.
