Education

Our children deserve the highest quality education. As a former member of the Midland Independent School District Board of Trustees, I am committed to improving our schools.

While I believe our educational institutions are best controlled at a local level, the federal government has played a role in holding our schools and teachers accountable for quality education through the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB).  While I am a supporter of the foundation of the law, I believe that we can do a better job of its implementation. Achieving benchmarks for students is a necessary and important feature of NCLB; however, I believe that our school systems should be given more flexibility to work to ensure that the goals we set for all of our students are met. I am a strong advocate of setting educational standards and rewarding those who meet the standards.  Not all children are the same, however, and so we it’s essential that we provide alternative ways to test children to ensure that we truly have a system in which no child is left behind.

Congress may soon reauthorize NCLB, and I will work to see that the federal government gives more freedom to the states, school systems, and parents so that they can find the best ways to meet the standards set forth in NCLB and ensure the best education for their children.

I will continue to listen to school administrators, teachers and students about issues that are important to them and work with my colleagues in Congress to improve education in Texas and nationwide.  To read more about education issues at a federal level, please visit the Committee on Education and Labor website at http://republicans.edlabor.house.gov/.
