Senator Warner, a former technology entrepreneur and Virginia governor, has long championed broadband technology as a significant tool to extend economic development opportunities and increase the overall competitiveness of America’s rural areas.

Senator Warner's progress:

  • In the Senate, Senator Warner has continued to fight for broadband development. He successfully amended the 2012 Farm Bill to provide new tools to extend high-speed Internet service to rural America. The amendment effectively targets loans and grants to unserved and underserved rural communities, and it also creates new metrics to improve accountability for taxpayers.
  • In addition, two other Warner proposals to promote cost-effective expansion of broadband service moved forward through an Executive Order signed by the President. The Executive Order instructs federal agencies charged with managing thousands of federal buildings and roads to adopt a uniform approach that will allow broadband carriers to build their networks on, and through, federal properties to help speed the overall connectivity of the nation’s communities, businesses and schools.
  • Senator Warner has also hosted two summits on broadband deveopment. The first, in July 2009, focused on helping Virginians maximize federal funding opportunities available through the economic recovery package. The second focused on helping Virginia localities learn about various funding opportunities and ideas for high-speed broadband deployment.
  • As Governor, Senator Warner worked with federal, state, local and private-sector partners to leverage Virginia’s tobacco settlement dollars to invest in building-out over 800 miles of fiber-optic broadband in Southwest and Southside, which helped to attract 2,200 jobs and $300 million of investment.
