    Three days after a shooter killed six people at a Gurudwara in Oak Creek, Wisconsin, Senator Coons joined members of the Delaware Sikh community for a candlelight vigil at the Sikh Center of Delaware. The purpose of the vigil was to take a stand against hate and honor the memory of those who died during the shooting.

    Senator Coons joined members of the University of Delaware community at the unveiling of the Horn Initiative for Entrepreneurship on October 12, 2012. The Horn Initiative is anticipated to have a transformative impact on innovation and entrepreneurship through the expansion of curricular, co-curricular and outreach programing. At the event, aspiring entrepreneurs pitched their business ideas to try to win funding as part of the launch celebration. University of Delaware alumnus Charles Horn (’75) and his wife Patricia Horn committed $3 million for the initiative, which will be housed in the Alfred Lerner College of Business and Economics.

    On October 11, 2012, Senator Coons hosted David Kappos, the Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property and Director of the United States Patent and Trademark Office, for a discussion with doctoral candidates at the University of Delaware and Delaware State University about commercializing technology developed at universities. Senator Coons is a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee and was a cosponsor of the America Invents Act, the 2011 legislation that radically modernized the patent system. Under Secretary Kappos advises the President, the Secretary of Commerce and the Administration on intellectual property matters.

    U.S. Senator Chris Coons (D-Del.), a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee and co-chair of the Senate Law Enforcement Caucus, stood with Dover police Sgt. David Spicer at an event in the Capitol on Tuesday to mark the purchase of the one-millionth bulletproof vest by a law enforcement officer under the federal Bulletproof Vest Partnership Grant Program.

    U.S. Senators Tom Carper and Chris Coons, and U.S. Rep. John Carney joined federal state and local officials to announce the naming of the Michael N. Castle Trail at the C&D Canal. Monday also marked the groundbreaking of the first phase of the approximately 16-mile long shared-use recreational trail along the north side of the C&D Canal.

    A job fair hosted by U.S. Senators Tom Carper and Chris Coons, and U.S. Representative John Carney on June 25, 2012 drew more than 2,600 job seekers who came to meet with 100 employers at the Chase Center on the Riverfront in Wilmington. Combined, the employers were hiring for more than 1,700 open positions.

    U.S. Senator Chris Coons hosted a briefing on May 15, 2012 for members of Congress and their staff to learn about and experience wearing bullet-resistant and stab-resistant body armor. The event, “Protection through Innovation: Bullet – and Stab-Resistant Body Armor and Our Nation’s Law Enforcement Officers,” was sponsored by the Senate and House Law Enforcement Caucuses and featured speakers from local and national law enforcement agencies, and the company that manufactures Kevlar, DuPont.
