STATEMENT BY SENATOR JOHN McCAIN ON THE PASSING OF SENATOR WARREN RUDMAN

November 20, 2012

Washington, D.C.U.S. Senator John McCain (R-AZ) today released the following statement on the passing of former U.S. Senator Warren Rudman (R-NH):

“I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Senator Warren Rudman, my dear friend and one of the most distinguished legislators of his time. Warren’s fierce independence and commitment to always placing the national interest over political expediency set a high standard and served as an inspiration to a generation of public servants, especially me.

“Warren’s remarkable career of service to the nation that he loved began in the uniform of the United States Army. He served with distinction in the Korean War, and he never forgot the lessons he learned there – that there is nothing more precious than serving a just cause that is greater than one’s own interest. It was this selfless and broad-minded devotion to our country that guided Warren in all of his life’s endeavors.

“As a Senator, Warren worked with everyone, and was respected by everyone, both Republicans and Democrats. He repeatedly reached across the aisle to address America’s greatest challenges. His work on the Gramm-Rudman-Hollings deficit reduction law made a lasting impact on the fight for fiscal responsibility, while his leadership on the Hart-Rudman Commission on National Security in the 21st Century foresaw the growing threat of global terrorism as well as our lack of preparedness for a major attack.

“Warren was a straight talker who earned the deep respect of Presidents and world leaders, his colleagues in the Senate, and most of all, the people of New Hampshire, who he represented so well for so many years. It was Warren Rudman who was largely responsible for my growing to love the people and the state of New Hampshire, and without him, I could not have won the state’s Republican presidential primary in 2000. Warren was my friend, and I will miss him dearly. Cindy and I offer our deepest condolences to all of Warren’s family and friends.”
