Here in New Hampshire we understand the importance of finding practical, bipartisan solutions to our problems. That's why you've seen me advocating so strongly for energy efficiency, which is the fastest, cheapest way to start addressing our energy needs. From Nashua’s City Hall to companies like Warner Power in Hollis and Filtrine Manufacturing in Keene, our state is already leading the way in helping homes and offices use less energy. That’s good for our pocketbooks and our environment.

A petition to the U.S. Senate leadership

To Majority Leader Harry Reid and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell:
The United States must address its energy problems. We are importing too much foreign oil and remain dependent on an outdated and costly energy infrastructure. As the costs of energy continue to rise, the nations of the world are racing to develop new technologies that will power the 21st century. Without immediate action, America is at the risk of getting left behind.

While disagreements remain about the right approach to fixing our nation’s energy problems, there are also areas of broad agreement that Congress can act on immediately. Nowhere is that better embodied than in a bill that’s sitting before the Senate, awaiting action: The Energy Savings and Industrial Competitiveness Act, S.1000, written by Democratic Senator Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire and Republican Senator Rob Portman of Ohio.

The Shaheen-Portman Act would help make the United States a global leader on the fastest and cheapest method we have for addressing our energy needs, energy efficiency. It encourages more private investment in efficient buildings and manufacturing technologies through low-cost, high-reward programs like strengthening voluntary national model building codes and expanding loan programs to include efficiency upgrades. It gives manufacturers tools for increasing energy efficiency in their supply chain. And it puts the federal government, the single largest user of energy in the country, on track to save taxpayer dollars by using less energy.

Energy efficiency is within our grasp. It uses proven technology that we can manufacture here at home to lower energy costs across all sectors of our economy.

Simply put, the Shaheen-Portman Act will mean jobs for Americans and a more efficient economy for our businesses. It will mean moving forward on a modern energy economy that produces fewer carbon emissions. We urge you to find a bipartisan agreement that will bring this bill to the Senate floor for debate and a vote. We can’t afford to wait.
