STATEMENT BY SENATOR JOHN McCAIN ON LAYOFFS AT RESOLUTION COPPER MINE

November 30, 2012

Washington, D.C. – Resolution Copper Mining LLC today announced that it will reduce its workforce by approximately 400 jobs at their mine in Superior, Arizona – an area of the state particularly hard-hit by the economic downturn and where job creation is desperately needed. As the company makes clear in its announcement today, these layoffs are a direct result of the inability so far of the U.S. Congress to pass H.R. 1904, the Southeast Arizona Land Exchange and Conservation Act. This legislation would execute a land exchange to allow the Resolution Copper Mine to expand its operations and develop North America’s largest copper ore resource, creating nearly 4,000 jobs.

“The Resolution Copper land exchange is a top priority for the State of Arizona,” said Senator John McCain. “Its passage requires the cooperation of the entire Arizona Congressional Delegation, and I call on my colleagues to join Senator Kyl, Congressman Gosar and myself in advocating for this legislation which is so important for job creation in our state.”
