December 4, 2012
(TUESDAY, December 4) – Senator Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) Tuesday announced that General Electric Aviation of Rutland is gaining a new U.S. Navy contract for $23,699,511 for the development and construction of fighter engines for F/A-18E/F aircraft. The contract, which is being apportioned among several regional GE plants, totals more than $197 million to build 52 engines. GE Rutland receives 12 percent of the total award.
As a senior member of the Senate Appropriations Committee and its Defense Subcommittee, Senator Leahy has long been a champion in the defense budget and procurement process for GE Aviation in Rutland. The Rutland plant is known for producing high-quality jet engine blades and vanes for a variety of aircraft. Leahy has often cited the Rutland plant as an example of a successful company doing good work in Vermont and for Vermont. The Rutland plant employs more than 1000 Vermonters and pays competitive hourly wages, giving a significant boost to Rutland’s and Vermont’s economy.
Leahy said, “GE Rutland and its workforce continue to prove their skill and success as a forward-leaning manufacturer and as a corporate citizen of Vermont. This contract reaffirms the value of GE Rutland’s products to our national defense and the confidence that the Navy has in their work.”
“GE Aviation is proud of the jet engine airfoils produced in our Rutland plant for the F414, a workhorse engine for the U.S. Navy,” said Jean Lydon-Rodgers, President and CEO of GE Aviation Military Systems. “We also appreciate the working relationship we enjoy with Sen. Leahy and his team as we make continued investments in our Rutland operations.”
