Peoria Disposal plans to turn 23 acres of the Clinton Landfill into an industrial waste site
In May 2011, Senator Kirk’s staff met with mayors and state representatives from Champaign, Urbana, Bloomington, Normal and Savoy to discuss a potential public health threat to the Mahomet Aquifer, which provides drinking water to 850,000 people in Illinois. Peoria Disposal plans to turn 23 acres of the Clinton Landfill, located directly above the Mahomet Aquifer, into an industrial waste site where it would be permitted to dispose chemicals and carcinogens like polychlorinated biphenyls, commonly known as PCBs. Following the meeting, Senators Kirk and Durbin wrote to the Environmental Protection Agency's Region 5 Administrator to express concern about the proposed dumping of PCBs in such close proximity to a source of drinking water for hundreds of thousands of Illinois citizens.
