Hagan Comments on ATSDR Camp Lejeune Chapter D Report
Hagan has fought for complete transparency and access to health care for victims since taking office
Tuesday, December 4, 2012
Washington, DC – U.S. Senator Kay Hagan (NC) released the following statement after the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) released the Camp Lejeune Chapter D Report today:
“Today’s report from ATSDR is another step towards closure for the families affected by water contamination at Camp Lejeune, but there is still work to do. Since taking office, I have pressed for answers and worked to ensure that those exposed to contaminated water at Camp Lejeune will receive the health care they need. Transparency is critical to determining the scope of contaminated drinking water at Camp Lejeune, and I will continue to monitor ATSDR’s progress on this matter.”

Together, Senators Hagan and Richard Burr (NC) included key provisions in the FY2011 Defense Authorization bill requiring the Navy and Marine Corps to provide ATSDR with a complete picture of all relevant Lejeune water contamination documents. This coordination was necessary to help ATSDR complete their studies, and provide an accurate portrayal of the contaminants that were present in Camp Lejeune's water supply.
Since coming to the Senate, Hagan has made it a priority to help provide answers to former Lejeune families. The Honoring America’s Veterans and Caring for Camp Lejeune Families Act, signed into law in August, opens access to VA health care for veterans and their family members who developed specific health problems after exposure to contaminated water at Camp Lejeune.
