Getting Help Abroad

Monday, May 14, 2012

Sen. Franken is proud to have been able to help the Iverson family return to Minnesota after Chau Iverson was robbed in Vietnam.

While traveling with her children recently, Chau Iverson had her green card stolen. Her husband, Jed, was able to obtain a temporary green card from United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). However, when Chau arrived with her children at the airport to leave Vietnam, officials told her that unless she had an exit visa and a boarding letter from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), she could not leave the country.

But when Ms. Iverson attempted to get a hold of the necessary boarding letter she was told that process would take over a month and that she would not be able to return home until the proceess was complete. So, the Iversons reached out to Sen. Franken's office.

The office worked directly with ICE headquarters to intervene with the ICE office in Vietnam. And with their help, Chau was issued a boarding letter and an exit visa in a timely manner.

Chau and her children returned to the United States on May 2, happy to be home and with family again.
